A roaring success Forty-five young people had an awesome time when they went to see The Lion King on 27 November 2011. For many of the young people, it was their first experience of a London theatre. The trip was made possible by an Awards for All grant to the Young Lives Foundation from the Big Lottery Fund. The grant also helped fund trips to Chessington World of Adventures, Thorpe Park and the Hop Farm.
Peer mentoring in schools The Young Lives Foundation will be providing training and support for young people to become peer mentors in schools in Medway thanks to a grant from the RMGBT Stepping Stones Scheme.
Young people help choose new YLF strapline The Young Lives Foundation's new strapline Making A Difference was chosen following a young people's focus group. Young people attending the focus group were drawn from across the range of YLF services and spoke of the difference that the Young Lives Foundation had made in their lives.
Young people quiz Medway MP
Chatham and Aylesford MP Tracey Crouch met with members of the Medway Children in Care Council on 15 April when they quizzed her as to why government doesn't do more for young people who leave care at 21. At the moment, young people can still receive support up to the age of 25 if they are in education or training. But, as the young people said, those not in education, training or employment are likely to be in real need of help after they are 21.
The Young Lives Foundation takes volunteering seriously
The Young Lives Foundation has received the Investing in Volunteers award, in recogniiton of the quality of support we provide for our volunteers. The award is for three years.
The Young Lives Foundation achieves national standard
The Young Lives Foundation has been awarded the national Mentoring & Befriending Foundation's Approved Provider Standard for our Kent & Medway Independent Visitors Service and our New Directions Mentoring Programme.

Children's Rights Director speaks at YLF event
Dr Roger Morgan, the Children's Rights Director for England, was a guest speaker at the Working Together for Children's Well-Being event at the Ramada Hotel, Hollingbourne on 30 September 2010. The invited audience also heard keynote addresses from Paul Carter, the Leader of Kent County Council and Dr Roger Kirton, Reader in Social Policy and Social Work at the University of Kent.
Celebrating volunteering
The value of our volunteers in the lives of young people in need was recognised at a special ceremony at the Ramada Hotel, Hollingbourne on 6 October 2008. More than 70 people attended the ceremony to see awards presented to volunteers who act as appropriate adults, independent visitors and mentors. Superintendent Rachel Adams of Kent Police presented the appropriate adult awards. Rose Collinson, Medway Council's Director for Children's Services, presented the awards for independent visitors and mentors in Medway. And Ann Allen, chairman of Kent County Council's children's champions board, presented the awards for volunteer independent visitors supporting Kent's young people in care.
Lord's Taverners minibus for YLF
England rugby international James Haskell presented the Young Lives Foundation with a ceremonial key at the Lord's Taverners pre-season lunch on Monday 21 April 2008 to mark the handing over of a 17-seater minibus to be used for YLF's activities programme for young people in need. |
