Here is where we answer some of the

questions we know young people are asking.

If you have a question you would like us to answer on this page, please let us know. We won't show your name.

Q: What's an IRO?

IRO is short for Independent Reviewing Officer. That is the person who chairs your Looked-After Child Reviews and makes sure that the decisions made are followed up. The IRO should always find a time before the review to talk with you about what's coming up and what you want to say or to happen at the review. They should also check out that you're OK with who's coming to the review.

Q: What's the Kent Pledge?

It's what Kent County Council says it will do for all its young people in and leaving care. You can have a look at what it says by going to our Kent Pledge page and clicking on Kent Pledge.

Q:   Is anything replacing the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)?

The government has announced a new scheme to replace EMA. It will start in September 2011 and the money will be given out by the schools or colleges. Looked after young people and care leavers who continue in education or training at 16 will be given guaranteed bursaries of £1,200 a year. Schools and colleges will be able to decide how this is to be paid - weekly, monthly or annually.

Q: My mate's got an independent visitor. Can I have one?

You might well be able to have one. Have a look at our independent visitor pages in this section to find out more.
